Each school year brings new opportunities to learn, grow and make memories.
Whether you’re a parent whose child is starting kindergarten or you’re a student heading off to college, the back-to-school season is filled with excitement — and plenty of preparation.
As you get ready for the first day of class, remember the Joliet Public Library offers free resources that can help students start the year with confidence. From tutoring and homework help to study spaces, technology and books that inspire a love of reading, the library is here to support learners every step of the way.
Get free homework help.
Homework doesn’t need to be a nightly battle.
The Joliet Public Library plans to offer free in-person reading and math tutoring for pre-K through fourth-grade students through the America Reads/America Counts grant in partnership with St. Francis University and Joliet Junior College.
Families can also access free online homework help through Brainfuse HelpNow via the library’s website, which connects students with live tutors for assistance in math, reading, writing and more.
Reserve a quiet place to study
If you need space to work with a tutor, the Joliet Public Library has that, too. Library cardholders can reserve a private study room at either branch for studying on their own or working with a tutor.
There are also larger size rooms for groups to collaborate on projects, or prep for an exam.
Find books your child actually wants to read. If your child doesn’t seem interested in reading, it could be that they just haven’t found the right book yet. Joliet Public Library can help you connect your child with books at their reading level and that fit their interests.
Our youth services librarians are always happy to make suggestions, and they host regular storytimes and book clubs that might pique kids’ interest.
The library’s website also links to NoveList K-8, a site that can help you choose books based on interests or other books your child likes.
Access trustworthy research resources. Need free resources for a school report or project? The library’s website provides 24/7 access to trusted research databases, including journals, encyclopedia articles and biographies.
The site also links free, downloadable practice worksheets for grades pre-K through fifth grade.
Use computers, Wi-Fi and printing
Need Wi-Fi to finish an assignment? The Joliet Public Library is open every day during the school year and offers use of computers, wireless internet, printing and scanning.
Bring your own device to the library and use our wireless internet, or log on to one of our computers to get online and do research or finish an assignment. Print out your homework here or submit it online.
Get technology help
As schools use more and more technology, it can get hard for parents and grandparents to keep up. If you have questions about how to use your computer, smartphone or tablet, sign up for one of the Joliet Public Library’s one-on-one tech help sessions.
Get a free library card
Through partnerships with area school districts, the Joliet Public Library offers student library cards free of charge to residents of the City of Joliet and Joliet Township. Sign your child up today either at the library or online.
