In 1876, the Joliet City Council voted to establish a public library, opening its doors with just 750 donated books and a bold belief in access to knowledge for all. That moment marked the beginning of what would become 150 years of learning, community, and connection.
In 2026, Joliet Public Library celebrates its sesquicentennial, a milestone that places us among the oldest public libraries in Illinois. Our founding came just four years after the Illinois Library Act was established, underscoring Joliet’s early commitment to public education and shared resources.
A Year of Celebration
Throughout the year, the Library will host special events, programs, and commemorations honoring our past while looking ahead to the future. From our humble beginnings to the vibrant library system we are today, this anniversary is a celebration of the people, stories, and ideas that have shaped us.
A Historic Year for Joliet
Our sesquicentennial aligns with other major local milestones. Route 66 and the Rialto Square Theatre are also celebrating 100 years in 2026, making this an extraordinary year to reflect on Joliet’s rich cultural and civic history.
